The short answer

In 2026, a bathroom remodel in NYC typically costs about $8,000–$15,000 for a cosmetic refresh and $15,000–$25,000 for a standard full remodel, with gut and high-end renovations running much higher. Bronx projects in one- to three-family homes often come in lower, because there are no co-op board fees or high-rise logistics.

The biggest cost drivers are moving plumbing, what's found behind the walls, and your tile and fixture choices.

Bathroom remodel cost in the Bronx vs Manhattan

Bronx bathrooms often land below those Manhattan numbers. Published home-improvement price surveys put the average Bronx bathroom remodel at roughly $6,000 to $16,000 for smaller jobs (HomeAdvisor) and about $16,700 to $31,700 for full remodels (This Old House). Here's why the Bronx is often cheaper:

  • More private houses. Many Bronx bathrooms are in one- to three-family homes, so there are no co-op board architect reviews, freight-elevator fees or large building security deposits.
  • Easier access. Parking, deliveries and debris removal are usually simpler than in a Manhattan high-rise.

Two things can push a Bronx job back up: old plumbing (galvanized pipes, worn drains) found once walls are open, and lead paint in homes built before 1960, which requires lead-safe work practices.

Where the money goes

On a typical full remodel, the budget splits across a few big buckets:

  • Labor: demolition, carpentry, tile setting, plumbing and electrical. Usually the largest share in NYC.
  • Tile and materials: floor and wall tile, backer board and the waterproofing membrane behind the shower.
  • Fixtures: tub or shower system, toilet, vanity, faucets, lighting and ventilation fan.
  • Permits and filings, when the work requires them.
  • Contingency: set aside 10–15% for surprises behind the walls.

What raises the cost

Moving plumbing

Moving the toilet, sink or shower drain is the biggest single cost jump. Rerouting drains and supply lines adds plumbing labor, more demolition and often more paperwork. MyHome estimates that keeping fixtures in place saves about $3,000 to $8,000.

Problems behind the wall

Rotted subfloor, leaking old pipes and failed waterproofing only show up after demolition. In older buildings, asbestos testing may also be required before demolition, with abatement adding cost if anything is found.

Tile and finishes

Large-format porcelain, natural stone, mosaic patterns and floor-to-ceiling tile all add material and labor time. A frameless glass shower door, heated floors or a freestanding tub push the budget toward the high-end tier.

Accessibility upgrades

Walk-in showers, grab bars and wider doorways for aging in place add cost, but are often worth planning in during a full remodel rather than later.

Do you need a permit?

Purely cosmetic work usually doesn't need a Department of Buildings permit. Plumbing work generally has to be done by a Licensed Master Plumber. If fixtures stay in place, the plumbing may be filed as a Limited Alteration Application (LAA); moving fixtures or changing building systems usually means an ALT-2 filing, which adds time and fees.

How to keep your budget on track

  1. Keep the layout unless moving a fixture truly solves a problem.
  2. Pick every finish before work starts: tile, vanity, fixtures and lighting. Late changes are where budgets break.
  3. Get an itemized, fixed-scope estimate that lists demolition, plumbing, tile, fixtures and permits separately, so you can compare bids line by line.
  4. Keep a 10–15% contingency for what's behind the walls.
  5. Ask about sales tax. Some renovation work may qualify as a capital improvement in New York State (Form ST-124); check with your contractor and tax advisor.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a bathroom remodel cost in the Bronx?

Most Bronx bathroom remodels fall between about $6,000 for a light refresh and $30,000 or more for a full remodel, based on published Bronx price surveys. Gut renovations and high-end bathrooms cost more. The final number depends on size, layout changes, plumbing condition and finishes.

Why are bathroom remodels more expensive in NYC?

Higher labor rates, licensed plumbers for permit work, building rules, older plumbing behind the walls, and limited parking and access all add cost. In co-ops and condos, board reviews and deposits add more.

What is the most expensive part of a bathroom remodel?

Usually labor and plumbing. Moving the toilet, shower or sink drain is one of the biggest cost jumps, followed by tile work and high-end fixtures.

Can I save money by keeping the same layout?

Yes. Keeping the toilet, sink and shower in their current spots avoids rerouting drains and supply lines, which can save several thousand dollars and often keeps permit paperwork simpler.

How long does a bathroom remodel take?

Construction on a typical full bathroom often takes a few weeks once materials and any permits are ready. Planning, selections and approvals can add more time before work starts.
